Mediterranean diet – voted the most effective diet in 2023!

U.S. News & World Report have published their official ranking of the best diets in 2023. It’s no surprise that the Mediterranean diet is in first place again this year!

Find out below what made doctors choose this dietary lifestyle as the most effective diet for years, and why you should follow it in 2024!

What is the ranking of the best diets in 2013?

This year, U.S. News, with the help of more than 30 nutritionists, doctors and epidemiologists, compiled a ranking of 24 diets to determine which diet is the most effective.

The ranking contains several categories – here are the winners in each one:

Most effective diet per total

The Mediterranean diet ranks first in this category with a score of 4.6 out of 5. In 2nd and 3rd place are the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet and the flexitarian diet.

The best diet for weight loss

First place in this category is the WeightWatchers diet. This diet is based on the concept of points. So each food has a number of ‘points’, calculated according to its nutritional content, and each person has a limit of weekly points they can use as they wish each day.

Although the concept is an interesting one, it comes with many restrictions and rules to follow. Just as calorie counting can become a problem when trying to lose weight, a similar “points” system would lead to similar problems.

The best diet for rapid weight loss

For rapid weight loss, we find the keto diet comes first. However, the keto diet is not the best diet to follow because it promotes giving up carbohydrates, one of the body’s essential macronutrients.

The most effective diet for diabetics

The DASH diet was considered the best diet for diabetics, closely followed by the Mediterranean diet in second place.

The most effective diet for bone and joint health

In this category, the DASH diet and the Mediterranean diet scored equally high, demonstrating how versatile and beneficial these two types of diet are.

The most effective diet for healthy eating

Unsurprisingly, the Mediterranean diet also came first in this category. This is because the diet promotes healthy eating based on quality, nutrient-dense foods.

The most effective diet for a healthy heart

The DASH diet received the highest score in this category, followed by the Mediterranean diet.

The Mediterranean diet is considered the most effective diet in combating a wide range of diseases

The criteria for this category were based on how well each diet helps you keep your weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar within the recommended range. Reducing these risk factors is essential in preventing long-term cardiovascular disease.

The best diet for the whole family

The Mediterranean diet, together with the flexitarian diet, were ranked number 1 in this category. Both diets promote a complete diet, suitable for people of any age, ethnicity or body weight.

The best plant-based diet

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Mediterranean diet took first place in this category too. Although the Mediterranean diet can also be eaten with animal products (such as fish), it is just as beneficial when based on vegetarian and vegan foods alone.

The easiest diet to follow

This category was based on criteria such as how easy it is to source the right foods, how simple it is to prepare menus in advance, and how many restrictions the diet imposes.

In 1st place are the flexitarian diet and the TLC (Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes) diet with a score of 4.4 out of 5. In second place are the DASH and Mediterranean diets with a score of 4.3 out of 5.

Why is the Mediterranean diet considered the most effective diet?

As we can see from the rankings, the Mediterranean diet came first in 5 out of 10 categories, or very close to first place in the other categories. There are many reasons why this diet is considered the most effective for a healthy and carefree life. Mediterranean diet:

  • Great benefits to heart health, preventing cardiovascular disease and early death through foods that lower blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar
  • May help control type 2 diabetes
  • It’s full of tasty and affordable foods that provide all the nutrients you need for good health
  • Can be combined with an active lifestyle for maximum benefits
